The Nashville Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will hold its last two non-partisan voter registration drives prior to the deadline to register for the State Primary and County General Election, August 5, 2010 today and tomorrow.
Today, staff and Board members of the NAHCC will be at their downtown office located on Third Avenue South from 4 P.M. to 7 P.M.
On Tuesday, July 6, staff will again be a the NAHCC's offices from 10 A.M. to 1 P.M. That will be the final day to register for the August 5 primary.
Education committee chair and board member Loraine Segovia says "Voter registration is the first step in the process of becoming an active member of our society, as new Americans we need to contribute not only with our talents and voice, but also our votes". Segovia who also heads the Latina Leadership forum and the annual recognition program honoring women leaders in the Latino community for the NAHCC during Hispanic Heritage month added: "Continuing the 4th of July Independence Day Celebration, We, Hispanic women too, are coming together to become registered voters, to be able to exerce our right to vote after a long battle by many women, finally granted by the nineteen amendment almost 90 years ago. This year many of our Hispanic women entrepreneurs have stepped up to assist in having other members of the community participate in this civic engagement initiative."
In addition the Nashville Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is planning a series of related educational forums for Hispanic businesses owners, students and members of the community at large. Similar voter registration drives are planned in Clarksville, Murfreesboro, Franklin, Memphis and Knoxville in partnership with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of East TN, H.O.P.E in Clarksville, and the newly formed NAHCC chapters in Rutherford and Williamson County. The NAHCC voter registration services are available without regard to voters' political preference."
Voter registration, citizenship and English programs are part of the civic engagement agenda behind the bi-lateral agreement signed last June 2, 2010 between the Nashville Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Hispanic Chamber of East Tennessee.
